01 · The gym
A working gym, not a showroom.
Dele Okafor opened Ropewell in 2011 with two heavy bags, a second-hand ring and a bell he still rings at the start of every class.
It is a proper boxing gym. The floor is worn, the bags are taped and the coaches all still train. We also happen to be the friendliest room in Leeds for someone who has never thrown a punch.
Most members never fight. They come for the rounds, the coaches and the people. A few go on to box. Everyone is welcome either way.

Five rules on the wall.
Wrap your hands.
Every session, every time. A coach will show you how on day one.
Respect the bell.
When it rings, you start. When it rings again, you stop.
Nobody spars before they are ready.
Your coach decides. There is no rush and no pressure.
Leave the ego at the door.
Everyone here was new once. Help the person next to you.
Wipe the bag.
Then the gloves. Then put them back where they live.
